Background: Frank Wray, owner and head coach at KW CrossFit in Cincinnati, OH, and his wife Katie, are raising money to build a school and community center in northern Haiti. The original Cima “school” was started in 2011 and was housed in a UNICEF donated tent, with an expanded “classroom” under a small blue tarp. The school was started after a young, 18-year old woman traveled hundreds of miles from Port-a-Prince to the Cima community with about 15 orphans from the earthquake.
With funds that we raised, a small school building with 3 classrooms was constructed in 2013. This provides classes for Kindergarten, 1st, 2nd and 3rd grades with another small classroom in the back for Kinder and Pre-Kinder. The current school has 150 students with a waiting list of over 50 more. There are 4th, 5th & 6th grade students, but there is no permanent structure for them to use! The Cima School employs a principal, 9 full-time teachers, 2 cooks & a security guard. All of these employees are paid via funds that Katie & Frank raise.
Frank and Katie work with Sonje Ayiti, a non-profit organization which means Remember Haiti, that was founded and is led by a dynamic Haitian-American woman named Gabrielle Aurel. Gabie & her team are inspiring because they work tirelessly to improve the life of Haitians in a way that is sustainable, not just a band-aid.
To date ~$100,000 has been raised for the school. Estimates are that it will cost about $200,000 to get the school built and have some operating funds in place.
Fund Raiser: We are changing the format this year from a 4-week competition to a single WOD.
Competitors can register for a fee of $30. You are welcomed and encouraged to give more with all proceeds going directly to the needy children of Haiti. Tax receipts will be sent to those donating above the $30 fee.
